What is the difference between bank, federal and public holidays?

Three terms are commonly used for non-working days, each with its own legal framework.

Bank holiday (UK)
A non-working day established under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971. Specific dates differ between England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Federal holiday (US)
A day designated by 5 U.S.C. § 6103 on which non-essential federal offices close. Private employers are not legally required to provide paid time off.
Public holiday
General term covering bank, federal, religious and civic non-working days recognised by national or regional law.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a UK bank holiday and a US federal holiday?

A UK bank holiday is established under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 and applies primarily to banks and most businesses. A US federal holiday is designated by federal law (5 U.S.C. § 6103) and closes non-essential federal offices; private employers are not legally required to observe it. The UK has 8 bank holidays in England & Wales; the US has 11 federal holidays.

Are bank holidays and federal holidays paid time off?

In the UK there is no statutory right to paid leave on bank holidays — entitlement depends on the employment contract, though most employers grant it. In the US private employers are not federally required to provide paid time off on federal holidays; only federal government employees are guaranteed the day off with pay.

How is the date of Easter calculated?

Western Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March. The earliest possible date is 22 March, the latest 25 April. Good Friday is two days before Easter Sunday; Easter Monday is the day after.

Why does Thanksgiving fall on a different date each year?

US Thanksgiving has been fixed to the fourth Thursday of November by federal law since 1941. Because the day-of-week is fixed but the date is not, Thanksgiving falls anywhere between 22 and 28 November.

What happens when a US federal holiday falls on a weekend?

Federal employees observe a weekend holiday on the nearest weekday: a Saturday holiday is observed the preceding Friday and a Sunday holiday the following Monday. Independence Day (4 July) is the most common example, with the observed federal holiday occasionally falling on 3 or 5 July.
